Annual Wellness Exams

Maintain your pet’s health through regular wellness exams

One of the most important ways you can maintain your pet’s health is through regular wellness exams. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends a check-up for your pet at least once a year. You may need to schedule more frequent exams as your pet ages, or if there is an on-going health issue. Your pet’s annual exam is equivalent to your annual physical and is an important part of your pet’s preventive medicine.

Perhaps the most important reason for the annual exam is to monitor your pet’s health and to detect any developing conditions as early as possible. Pets can’t tell us how they are feeling, and disease or illness may be present before there are any noticeable symptoms. Left untreated, health issues can worsen and even become irreversible. As your pet ages, this preventive measure becomes even more necessary. Regular exams can protect your pet’s well-being and also save you money in the long run.

During the routine exam, we will check your pet’s vital signs and weight. We will ask you for a complete rundown of your pet’s health, including medical history, activity level, eating habits and behaviors. We will conduct a comprehensive physical exam of your pet from nose to tail, feeling the skin, muscle, and bones, and performing a dental check. We will record your pet’s baseline medical values, such as temperature, lab work, and body condition to make sure your pet is healthy now, and to provide better care in the event of a future emergency. Depending on your pet’s age, we may administer vaccines or perform diagnostic tests, such as urinalysis, blood work, or intestinal parasite tests. We have developed wellness protocols for each stage of your pet’s life, and we want to make sure that your pet is not showing early signs of any health issues.

The wellness exam does not usually require costly or complicated medical tests or procedures. While some pets may need x-rays, blood work or other tests for conditions related to age, disease or injury, the wellness exam usually involves simply a general assessment of your pet’s health to avoid any major health issues going undetected.
