Behind the Scenes: How We Prioritize Sick and Injured Pets

Behind the Scenes: How We Prioritize Sick and Injured Pets

At Clifton Ave Animal Hospital, we understand that sitting in a veterinary lobby with a sick or injured pet is one of the most stressful experiences a pet owner can face. When your companion is hurting, every minute feels like an hour.

You might notice that occasionally, a pet who arrived after you is brought into the treatment area first. We believe in total transparency with our clients, so we want to pull back the curtain on the Veterinary Triage System—the medical protocol we use to ensure every animal receives the life-saving care they need exactly when they need it.

Understanding Veterinary Triage

Triage is the process of determining the priority of patients’ treatments based on the severity of their condition. Just like in a human ER, our medical team is trained to identify “drop-everything” emergencies. These are cases where a delay of even a few minutes could be life-threatening.

Priority 1: Immediate Life-Threatening Emergencies

These patients are taken to the back immediately for stabilization. Examples include:

  • Difficulty Breathing: Blue-tinged gums, gasping, or heavy panting in cats.
  • Active, Profuse Bleeding: Wounds that cannot be controlled with simple pressure.
  • “Blocked” Cats: Especially in males, an inability to urinate is a critical, painful emergency.
  • Loss of Consciousness or Seizures: Active neurological crises.

Priority 2: Urgent but Stable

These are pets who are in significant discomfort or have serious conditions but are currently stable. This includes deep lacerations, sudden limping, or persistent vomiting.

Priority 3: Non-Urgent/Minor

These are uncomfortable but non-life-threatening issues, such as ear infections, minor skin rashes, or broken nails.

Why the Wait?

When a critical emergency arrives, our entire “behind-the-scenes” team shifts focus. While you may be in the waiting room, our doctors and technicians are often performing CPR, administering oxygen, or prepping for emergency surgery.

We promise to provide that same level of “all-hands-on-deck” dedication to your pet should they ever face a critical moment.
